I. GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY
PHILOSOPHY
Solusi University believes that human beings were created by God in His own image and that, through sin, they became separated from God. However, through the redemptive work of God’s Son, Jesus Christ, humans can be restored to a full relationship with God. In keeping with these beliefs, Solusi University gives special emphasis to the wholistic development of the individual’s spiritual, mental physical, and social faculties.
Also fundamental to Solusi University’s beliefs, is the equality and dignity of all humans, regardless of race, tribe, gender, colour or handicap. We further believe that a life dedicated in service to God and to fellow human beings constitutes the essence of University’s existence.

The University exists to provide quality holistic and transformational education based on the Seventh-day Adventist Church philosophy of education in order to equip students for useful service to God and the community, and to enjoy productive lives.
PURPOSE
Solusi University exists to set forth within the religious heritage of the Seventh-day Adventist Church students dedicated to lives of selfless service for God and man; to guide in the formation ofcharacters marked by integrity, loyalty to God and country, self-discipline, responsibility and tolerance; to develop students’ abilities in critical thinking; to bring forth acceptable levels of refinement and aesthetic taste; to encourage respect for the dignity of labour and to offer guidance to the community, church and society.
HIGHER THAN THE HIGHEST HUMAN THOUGHT CAN REACH IS GOD’S IDEAL FOR HIS CHILDREN-GODLINESS, GODLIKENESS, IS THE GOAL TO BE REACHED (Education, p. 18)

Course Description
EDPS 420 Sociology of Education
PGED 500. Sociology of Education is a one e semester, 18 credit course. It is an undergraduate course. This course consists of 15 units which include nature and Scope of sociology of education, main sociological perspectives, socialization , social differentiation and social stratification, education and social values, social functions of education and sociology of teaching and sociological change
The module also introduces students to the dynamics of interrelationships between the state, the education institution and the citizens. All these are integrated into the module in order to provide students with the necessary social interaction skills needed to guide the process of learning in the classroom to produce graduates who can make meaningful contributions to society.
Course Aim
The major aim of this course is to explore the relationship between education and the society for better understanding of the functionality of the sub-systems in the society. It also aims at exposing the student teachers to contemporary educational issues for proper performance in the classroom. Sociology aims at drawing the attention of the student teacher to the cross cultural analysis of social issues for better understanding of their environment.
Expected Learning Outcomes
By the end of their course the student should be able to;
1. Define key terms : Sociology, society, education, culture, norms, values, social stratification, social differentiation
2. Explain the relationship between education and society
3. Discuss the functions of education in Society
4. Compare the different sociological perspectives on the role of education in society
5. Describe the role of different socialization agents.
6. Discuss the role of education as an agent of maintaining stability as well as introducing change in society
7. Discuss the different forms of authority that enhance the relationship between school and society
8. Describe the role of the school in discipline and social control

Course Requirements
The following requirements are expected from each student
Ø Class attendance; At least 80%
Ø Participation in class- individual as well as in groups
Ø Timely Submission of assignments
ASSIGNMENTS POLICY
1. Do not use class time to record assignments. Recorded assignments MUST be received by lecturer at least 30 minutes before class time.
2. Please submit ALL assignments in time. Better yet , before due dates.
3. A Late Assignment depreciates by 5 % every day...
4. After One week (7 days );It is worth 65 %.
5. After 2 weeks it's worth 30%
6. Beyond 19 Days - PLIZ DO NOT BOTHER SENDING
7. Students will be heavily penalized for plagiarized work.
