COURSE OUTLINE



 

Course Description:

This is an undergraduate course.

The student will be exposed to Sociological principles that influence teaching and learning. The role of the school in the society will also be discussed.

Course objectives

At the end of this course the student will be able to:

1.     Define the key terms such as: Sociology, Sociological Perspective, Education.

2.     Discuss the relationship between education and Sociology

3.     Compare the major Sociological Perspectives

4.  Discuss the role of different Socialization agents

5.     Discuss sociological principles that influence learning.

6.     Discuss the influence of school on society

7.     Identify common societal needs and challenges and the role of the school in solving these

8. Discuss the role of  the School in sociological change

9.     Plan projects which the school could be engaged in to improve the society.

10.  Apply psychological and sociological theory to improve learning.

11.  Appreciate how the humans were created with ability to learn and socialize.

Course Requirements

Each student is expected to observe the following:

Ø  Punctual attendance at every lecture session.

Ø  All assignments must be typed, (DOUBLE SPACED) and submitted on time.

Ø  Contribute orally in class discussions.

Ø  Write and present a research project

Ø  Write all quizzes, mid-semester examination and Final examination.

Course Content:

1.     Introduction and definitions; 

2. Nature Nurture Debate- Prenatal to early child hood development

3.   Sociological Perspectives( Theories)

Sociological perspectives that influence education.

4.     Social organization; social groups, 

5.  socialization,

6. Social change, social problems

7.   Role of the school in society

8. School and social Change

9. School and social control

10.  Sociological Issues & Possible school planned projects that could help the society.

 

Assignment:

1.     Identify ONE societal need and plan projects which the school could be engaged in to improve the society. Write the project paper and present in class.
