Course Description

This course is a four and half (4.5) credit unit course in a study of Policy and Legal Issues in Education. Emphasis will be placed on definition of policy as a guiding principle in education. Focus will be put on policy formulation models and their application to the education, training and management scenarios. This module is based on the idea of the interaction between education and politics; political ideology and the philosophy of the land. Focus will be stressed on a broader perspective, the policy environment, determinants of public policy, key players in policy formulation and the use of models in policy formulation process and the relevance of these models in the modern political scenario of the country. The course shall emphasise on the deeper understanding of policy analysis specifically on current policies in the field of education; Updated curriculum as policy; Education for all (EFA); Inclusive and Special education, etc.

Course Organization and Approach

Policy and Legal Issues in Education (MELM 613) uses a blended learning approach (an approach to learning that combines face-to-face and online learning experiences). It is participatory, learner-centered, and adult education approach in nature.  This approach recognizes that YOU are responsible for your own learning.  The instructor can only provide opportunities to learn, but cannot force you to learn.  Course material is presented in substantive readings from the text; topical readings from the reader; lecture; and class discussions.  You are expected to work hard in this course; for every hour of class time, you should spend at least two to three hours outside of class preparing by doing readings, assignments, studying for quizzes and exams, and thinking about the course material.

You are expected to take responsibility for the success of the course, that is, you should take an active interest not just in the course material, but in the course itself, making it a success for all participants.  Factors such as interest, motivation, creativity, and initiative are important elements in evaluating your performance in the course and assigning a grade.
