ECED 130 THEORY OF EDUCATION- Sociological foundations of Early Childhood Development (3 Credits)
Course outline
Course description
The Historical & sociological foundations of education focuses on how social institutions and individual experiences affect education process and its outcomes. It is mostly concerned with the public schooling systems of modern industrial societies and their influence on the education of the young child. Socialization process and impact of different socialization agents on the growing child are discussed. Sociological foundations also include character development, personality, moral and socio emotional development. Socialization theories and their influence on the practice of teaching and learning are discussed. The course also includes environmental disasters that affect early childhood such as abuse, HIV/ AIDS, Covid19 Pandemic, Floods and disaster preparedness.
Course objectives
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
1. Explain the significance of the different agents of socialization.
2. Compare different sociological theories.
3. Critique different sociological theories
4. Discuss how global social issues affect education and development of the infant child.
5. Describe how the teacher may harness mass media so as to use it beneficially for ECE.
6. Research on possible social challenges that may impact early childhood development.
